Mildred Thornton Ballenger (1756-1840)

Mildred Thornton Ballenger was the daughter of Joseph Ballenger Jr., and Sarah Hensley. Joseph Ballenger Jr., being the son of Joseph Ballenger Sr., and Charity Wade. Joseph Sr.'s parents were Henry Ballinger (note the spelling change) and Mary Harding. Henry was the "immigrant ancestor" coming from England to New Jersey sometime around 1680. He married Mary Harding in 1684 -- she was born and raised in New Jersey.
"Milly" Ballenger married James Martin White 29 May 1775 in Franklin Co., [Virginia?]. They had a daughter, Nancy Kidd White, who married Jesse Mann. Nancy and Jesse produced Narcissa Mann who went on to marry Campbell Milstead.
Narcissa Mann-Milstead c1900, sent to her son, Walter Ellis Milstead with a handwritten message on the back: "Do not forget me"
While looking for more information on Mildred Thornton Ballenger I came across this website: http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.ancestry.com/~gohrpage/ballinger.html
Which had an interesting lineage (and this is just for Byron...)
Through the Ballinger E-mail list, I have discovered that I am a distant cousin
of President George Walker Bush through his mother, Barbara (Pierce) Bush. Here
is the lineage:
Henry Ballinger (ca. 1660-ca. 1733) = Mary Harding, (ca.
1663-1739)
Thomas Ballinger (1685-1739) = Elizabeth/Mary Elkington (b. 1696)
Samuel Ballinger (1733-1822) = Elizabeth Groff (1740-1786)
Joshua Ballinger (1762-1814) = Sarah Jones (1762-1817)
Sarah Ballinger (1800-1856) = ????? Sprague
Mary Jane Sprague (ca. 1823-1857) = Jonathan Haines (b. ca.
1819)
Sarah Haines (1855-1888) = Jacob Marion Flickinger (1849-1917)
Lula Dell Flickinger (b. 1875) = James Edgar Robinson (1868-1931)
Pauline Robinson (1896-1949) = Marvin Pierce (1893-1969)
Barbara Pierce (b. 1925) = George Herbert Walker Bush, President of the U.S.A. (b. 1924)
George Walker Bush, President of the U.S.A. (b. July 6, 1946)

Robert Trumbull

Robert Trumbull is on the Austin side of the family. His daughter, Clarissa Trumbull, married Jason White and together they had daughter, Nancy White (picture below). Nancy White was the wife of Alonzo Dunbar. Alonzo and Nancy had Clement Dunbar, father of Mabel Clara Dunbar from an earlier post. Hopefully, that makes some sense of the lineage.

Taken straight from the Find A Grave website:

Robert TRUMBULL

Birth: 1754 Glasgow, Scotland
Death: Aug. 24, 1840 Craftsbury, Orleans County, Vermont, USA

Son of Robert Trumbull and Ann Jackson. Husband of Lucy Babcock. Robert enlisted in the British Army at age 17. He was on a British transport that sailed into Massachusetts the day of the Battle of Bunker Hill. He became heart and soul in the American cause. One day at noon when the sentries were changing, he made a break for the cat-tails, flags and long grass along the shore. Bells and guns sounded and a guard was dispatched to take him. If captured he would have been shot. He lay with only his head out in a thicket of tall grass with water two or three feet deep about him until the same hour the next day. Then seeing a fishing boat he swam toward it. The fisherman saw his plight and took him in. A British guard also saw him swimming and fired at him but he escaped capture and was taken by these men before American officers before whom he swore allegiance and enlisted as a private in the Continental Army. Later he drilled recruits and organized companies until the end of the war.

Burial: North Craftsbury Cemetery, Craftsbury, Orleans County, Vermont, USA
Plot: L 38

Sons of the American Revolution

So far, I am able to trace back to 4 individuals that would qualify for the Sons of the American Revolution on *my* side (through the Austins) and 1 individual thus far for my husband's Truslow side. I know that there are many more, so more information to come as I work on them. Information below is from DAR Patriot Index, unless noted otherwise.

Mabel Clara Dunbar

1) Mabel Clara Dunbar at various stages of her childhood. (click on the photo to enlarge it)
2) Robert Dunbar Austin holding younger brother Frederick while Mabel Clara Dunbar-Austin holds baby Elisabeth Rosemary. c.1915

3) Probably one of my favorite pictures is this unusual photo post-card of Mabel Clara Dunbar taken from different angles and super-imposed as if she were sitting with her "selves" at the table. Talk about split personalities! c. 1910

Mabel Clara Dunbar was born 08 Nov 1887 in Southfield, Oakland County, Michigan. One of two children born to Clement Alexander Dunbar and Elisabeth Agnes Stewart, she married Frederick Richard Austin 02 Mar 1905 in Detroit, Wayne County, Michigan. Tragically, she succombed within three days time of catching the Spanish Infuenza (before her 44th birthday) on 21 October 1921. She left behind three small children, Robert Dunbar Austin (my grandfather), Elisabeth Rosemary Austin, and Frederick Richard Austin Jr.
