Robert Trumbull

Robert Trumbull is on the Austin side of the family. His daughter, Clarissa Trumbull, married Jason White and together they had daughter, Nancy White (picture below). Nancy White was the wife of Alonzo Dunbar. Alonzo and Nancy had Clement Dunbar, father of Mabel Clara Dunbar from an earlier post. Hopefully, that makes some sense of the lineage.

Robert TRUMBULL

Birth: 1754 Glasgow, Scotland
Death: Aug. 24, 1840 Craftsbury, Orleans County, Vermont, USA

Son of Robert Trumbull and Ann Jackson. Husband of Lucy Babcock. Robert enlisted in the British Army at age 17. He was on a British transport that sailed into Massachusetts the day of the Battle of Bunker Hill. He became heart and soul in the American cause. One day at noon when the sentries were changing, he made a break for the cat-tails, flags and long grass along the shore. Bells and guns sounded and a guard was dispatched to take him. If captured he would have been shot. He lay with only his head out in a thicket of tall grass with water two or three feet deep about him until the same hour the next day. Then seeing a fishing boat he swam toward it. The fisherman saw his plight and took him in. A British guard also saw him swimming and fired at him but he escaped capture and was taken by these men before American officers before whom he swore allegiance and enlisted as a private in the Continental Army. Later he drilled recruits and organized companies until the end of the war.
